The band was very fortunate to have, as principal euphonium, Barrie Perrins. He was National Euphonium Soloist of Great Britain on four occasions and was twice runner - up for the title of overall Champion Soloist. Barrie was a regular contributor to British and foreign music journals and toured several European countries as a soloist - lecturer. In 1976 he was awarded The Insignia of Honour at the Royal Albert Hall for his service to the Brass Band Movement. After leaving the John Dickinson Band in 1960 he became principal euphonium of the Hendon Band.
